This linoleum block print is created as an homage to my favorite animated movie of all time, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by the great Japanese animator and author Hayao Miyazaki. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind tells the story of a young princess who is dedicated to the protection and deep intimacy between her, her small village, and a "toxic jungle" where creatures abound live amongst toxic spore producing mycellium-- making the jungle uninhabitable and dangerous for humans. Nausicaä's village is attacked and thrown in the middle of a war between human empires that threatens both her home and the deeply misunderstood creatures in the Toxic Jungle. She has an unusual gift for communicating with the giant insects, particularly with the Ohmu, gigantic, armored, isopod-like insects who are the most intelligent creatures in the Toxic Jungle. With the help of her windrider and her animal friend, Teto, Nausicaä defends her land, Ohmu, and the world humans have destroyed and cast off.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind's solar punk storyline and values are in deep connection with mine. It's been a dream to create this fan art, and finally, after years of dreaming and 7+ months of work, 65+ hours of carving, and weeks of test printing, the print is ready to come into the world.
I hope you connect with this work and Miyazaki's masterpiece as much as i do. We could all use a bit of Nausicaä in us.
*Please note that due to the nature of hand-carved linoleum block printing, every print will have its own unique quality. Each edition is inspected to be of the best quality and similar, but I cannot ensure an exact replica of the print pictured on this site. Part of the magic of printmaking is all of the print-specific marks like "noise" or carving marks that add to the feel of the print. Please take note of this when ordering.
