ADINKRAHENE is a hand carved and printed linoleum block print made on 18x18” archival Stonehenge paper in two color ways: gold ink on Black Stonehenge paper, brown ink on cream Stonehenge paper, and blind emboss (no ink) on cream Stonehenge paper. Each color way is in a limited edition of 15.
ADINKRAHENE is a print featuring decorative cowrie shells in the pattern of three concentric circles. The design is inspired by traditional African (Ghana) Adinkra symbols. Adinkrahene means “King of the Adinkra symbols.” It is a symbol for authority, leadership, and charisma. With the cowrie shells, this print is an ode to Black royalty and traditions of using gifts from the earth as currency, trade, and tradition. May these shells act as protection and portal— for your lineage, your royalty, your peace.
A note from the artist— Inspired by both the stories shared to me by my grandmother as well as her home decor, this print pays homage to my cultural roots as a bi-racial Black American. I felt my grandmother’s energy racing through my hands as I carved each cowrie shell. Unique and textured, just how I remembered her to be. For you Grandma Barbara.
ADINKRAHENE will be shipped rolled in a cardboard tube and rolled in protective glassine paper. All additions to the order will be rolled and shipped with the piece. If the order contains items that cannot be rolled, an additional parcel will be set out at no extra charge to the customer.
Framing Recommendations: display in a flush 18x18” frame for a tight fit. The artist does recommend a custom cut mat and frame to showcase the full radiance of the artwork. Display out of direct sunlight in order to preserve the life of your print.
*Please note that due to the nature of hand-carved linoleum block printing, every print will have its own unique quality. Each edition is inspected to be the best quality and similar, but I cannot ensure exact replica of the print pictured on this site. Part of the magic of printmaking is all of the print-specific marks like "noise" or carving marks that add to the feel of the print. Please take note of this when ordering.
